Chess Club

Our Program

Let's have fun with the classic game of chess! Join the 1 in 4 Burroughs students that attend each week.

There's a reason this ~1,500 year old game is still so popular worldwide! With only 6 types of pieces on an 8x8 checkerboard and one way to win, it can be picked up quickly. Over time, it grows with the player to become a strategic game that fosters critical thinking and fair play.

Our club spans kids just learning the game to passionate players, incorporates assigned matches and free play with friends, chess puzzles, and small group coaching. And there are treats (but not too many)!

Unlike team activities, there's no commitment required. So come give it a try!

Is this a good fit for us? We're open to first to fifth graders (See FAQ re. Kindergartners). You don't need to know chess to join. If joining after the first few sessions, it's helpful to know the piece movements. Check out our resources page in the menu.

When: Chess club occurs each Friday that school's in session, starting in mid-October and ending at spring break. Teachers bring students to us from their last class and our sessions end at 4:55 PM. See the Calendar. You can come as often or little as you like.

Where: We meet in the media center on the 2nd floor and the adjacent lab & bridge spaces.

Cost: FREE! We are supported by the Burroughs PTA. Consider supporting them however you can. They do a lot.

Are you able to help & up for some fun? Check out what the kids are up to and help out! Chess club is entirely run by volunteers - mostly parents and grandparents. We need approximately 13 each week and can use regular and ad-hoc volunteers, regardless of chess experience. If you're up for playing a bigger role, we need assistance with club administration and coaching. Take a look at our Volunteering page for more information.
